California - Senator Fred Hemmings awarded the
prestigious Lifetime Achievement award to long-time friend Randy
Rarick in front of a crowd of top surf business leaders and ocean
environmental organizations at the Waterman's Ball.
The event, hosted by the Surf Industry Manufactures Association (SIMA)
was held at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa on 24 August.
Champion surfer Senator Hemmings was the Waterman of the Year
recipient in 2002.
The SIMA environmental fund has raised more than $3 million in the
past 17 years for organizations dedicated to protecting and
preserving our oceans, beaches and surf break. This year, it hopes
to raise more than $450,000.
The following night Rarick hosted and introduced Senator Hemmings as
a keynote speaker at a special invite only event at the Surfing
Heritage Foundation in San Clemente, California. Hemmings talked
about ocean preservation, conservation and the issues faced by the
islands; ocean pollution, unsafe bacteria runoff and irresponsible
coastal development.
