Sa’Moana Resort/ Virgin Blue 10th Annual Lennox Longboard Classic 2007.

The 10th anniversary year for the Classic saw it named the Sa’Moana Resort Virgin Blue 10th Annual Lennox

Longboard Classic 2007 with a great 7 days surfing holiday prize to Samoa staying at Sa’Moana Resort & flying Virgin Blue Airlines was on offer for one competitor as a ‘draw prize’ at the events presentation on Sunday 5th August at 4pm.

The Classic was held on the 4th & 5th of August with 120 competitors from as wide spread as South Australia to

Bundaberg QLD arriving at Lennox Head to surf & compete in over 9 age divisions both male, female & mixed. The

contest site was Lennox Main Beach in front of the Lennox Point Hotel, the venue for the last 10 years.

Saturday the 4th saw round 1 heats for the 9 divisions being held, plus the semi finals for the Over 50’s & Over 55’s

conducted in the afternoon. Saturday’s surfing was in a metre swell with predominate SW offshore winds, cloudy

skies with patches of sun, but no rain.

On Saturday night the events festivities started at the Lennox Point Hotel at 7pm with the Coopers Ale promotion &

‘competitors draw’ with a great range of giveaways/products from some of the various event sponsors. Two

longboards were given away to competitors, one a Catapult Surf Tools longboard which went to Craig Jones from Old Bar NSW and the Astro Surfboards(Gary Burden) longboard won by Kym Presgrave from the Sunshine Coast QLD. The night was greatly enjoyed by all with the surf music provided by Mal & the Longboarders.

Sunday the 5th brought us a pristine winter’s day, with off-shore winds, an increasing tide & swell with the high at

midday. Magic longboarding metre plus waves. Sunday was semi-finals & finals day bringing on & delivering great

surfing conditions with exceptional exhibitions of longboard surfing throughout the day, making this the 10th year one

to mark down as a milestone, & special one, in the Classic’s history.

The stand out surfing was in the Old MAL semi-final, surfing from Jackson Close (Burleigh, QLD) & Justin Healey

(Caloundra, QLD) with fluent style nose rides, really showing how to handle these pre 67 boards. Also a very high

standard of longboarding was set in the Junior final with Bryce Young, the eventual winner of the this division, showing the power, soul & flow of a seasoned surfer. Jackson Close winning the highly competitive & talented Open 9 foot division also showed amazing control.

In the Over 50’s division local Lennox and Byron long time surfer John Giles won over a very talented field. Glen

Cunningham from Bundaberg, QLD won the double with the Over 30’s & Over 40’s showing a powerful flowing style. In the Ladies, Kirsty Webster (Tweed, NSW) was the standout winning the Ladies Open & Over 35’s Ladies trophies. At the Presentation, the fantastic holiday to Samoa for 7 days was won by Kym Presgrave (Sunshine Coast, QLD) making it a triple with also winning a competitors board on Saturday night & the Over 55’s division.

The event raffle with the 1st prize of a longboard from Fluid Foils & Ed Sinnott Surfboards Ballina, was won by Wayne Gurney from South Australia. Funds from the raffle will be directed towards local charities & organisations such as the Cancer Council of NSW, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Lennox Head Rural Fire Service & Lennox Surf lifesaving club as we have done in previous years.
