A Charity Surf Day will be held on Saturday 9th December in Point Lonsdale to raise awareness and donations for Cottage by the Sea. Cottage by the Sea was established over 116 years ago to provide relief care, in a holiday environment, for children from all over Victoria.
The Cottage is a large double storey building, set in a garden/playground setting, situated in Queenscliff and overlooking Port Phillip Heads. During the year Cottage by the Sea host around 850 disadvantaged kids. From these 850 kids some have been chosen by the camp staff to return for a special surf day. Here the kids will learn how to surf, meet celebrities and help to raise money for Cottage by the Sea.
Celebrities surfing with the kids include triple gold medalist Cathy Freeman, Melbourne Footballer David Neitz, two time world longboard champion Beau Young, and some Geelong Football stars, among others.
Tony Featherston, General Manager for Cottage by the Sea stated “Demand for assistance by the Victorian community has increased dramatically over the last few years and the Cottage simply cannot provide accommodation for every child in need - without support. I’m stoked that these celebrities and companies have donated their time, money and products to help us help kids.”
The event will happen around midday at Point Lonsdale Beach (if conditions deteriorate the location will move to just inside the Bay at Point Lonsdale). Point Lonsdale Surf School, owned and operated by Mark Phipps, will host the event, supplying surfing equipment and coaches for the fun day of surfing. Point Lonsdale Boardriders will also be lending a hand.
Coastalwatch’s Ben McCartney has forecasted that the surf looks like being at the end of a swell with speculative potential. He’ll update this in his forecasts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday on the website. Other supporters of the event will include Quiksilver, Bellbrae Wines, Coastal Stikas and Precision Screen Printers.
