All fun for longboarders

by John Hill

Wednesday, 14 February, 2007

RAIN, onshore winds and storm surf conditions did not dampen the spirits of the 100 competitors in the Makorori First Light Longboard Surfing Classic (MFL).

Surfers came from Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and Hawaii to mix it with a hard core local contingent of longboarders.

And it was locals who dominated the finals, with the exception of two Whakatane surfers Tony Ogilvy and Dylan Barnfield, making it into their respective finals.

Ogilvy back again, after not showing up for many years, walked away with the over 50s first place trophy while Barnfield was runner-up in the junior division.

Gisborne’s longboard legend and national champion Michael Fitzharris won the open title.

Tim Madson, Caroline Ryan and Charlie Brown kept the Gisborne flag flying high with wins in the O40, women and junior classes.

This event has the same number of competitors on the open, 040 and over 50 divisions, which organisers said made the day entertaining and enjoyable to watch.

"Many friends on the beach become fierce competitors once they hit the water and minor bets are being placed among competitors on who will beat the other this year," said David Timbs. "Ernie Cabanilla is the Hawaiian. His wife has connections in Hawke’s Bay and he loves coming up here."

Timbs said the women’s division and juniors were well supported with an influx of competitors from Whakatane and Hawke’s Bay, making the trip.

In it’s 13th year the MFL attracts huge spot prize sponsorship with everyone getting at least one prize and there were also two major spot prizes with Richard Gordon getting the Walker Reality $1500 overseas travel voucher and Jayda Fitzharris a new Blitz Longboard.

"The MFL is all about the spirit of surfing, camaraderie, fun, winner does not take all, family, great trophies, tradition, cultural diversity, and mate-against-mate while laughing all the while," said Timbs.

"This year’s event achieved all that and more despite the elements not being too kind on us. But longboarders are a hardy, stubborn bunch who have fun no matter what."
