Australia and New Zealand's big wave community gathers at Bondi
tonight for the presentation of the Oakley/ASL Big Wave Awards.
With a prize pool of $30,000, the awards recognise the riders of
Australasia's biggest and most challenging surf. An epic selection of
entries was received for the competition, which ran from June 1, 2006, to
February 7, 2007. All the contenders, including crew from West Oz and NZ are
flying in for the presso.

Challengers Paul and Jake Pato, Alfy Cater, Damon Eastaugh, Daniel Kereopa,
Doug Young, Damien Warr and Kyle Davidson will join a crowd of frothing
glitterati at Bondi Pavilion to find out just who will take out the three
major prizes: Biggest Ride, Biggest Paddle-in, and Best Overall Performance.
The judges have been pounding their heads - their own and each other's -
against various walls in an attempt to come up with winners from a pack of
entries that broke every big wave record in Australia's surfing history.
Event co-ordinator Nick Carroll has spent the past two days mockingly
dismissing pleas for presso invites from B-list celebrities and reality TV
stars, who seemingly will do anything to ride the coattails of this amazing
event and its strong, silent, ultra-cool entrants.

Winners will be announced around 9:30pm at the ceremony, which will no doubt
then descend into an orgy of big wave drunken machismo and flashy Sydney
Eastern Suburbs groupie flesh mangling.
Photogs up for the accompanying photo awards include ASL contribs Jamie
Scott, Cory Scott, Russell Ord and videographers Chris Kirkham, Adam Kennedy
and Calum Macauley.
