31st BUFFALO BIG BOARD SURFING CLASSIC RESULTS

All the conditions at Makaha were there to have a great event with 12 tandem teams showing up for the 31st Buffalo Contest.  Plenty of waves, sunny, warm and relaxed atmosphere were the ingredients to compose the perfect recipe to make this successful event one of the best events ever.

Early Sunday morning the trials start with some of the best teams in the water. Brian Keaulana & Kathy Terada, who may have been tired from the day before running 9 divisions, didn’t show us their true level and the show came from Kalani Vierra and Blanche (I’m Back) Yoshida. Simply  “INCREDIBLE”. Everything was perfect. The surfing was impeccable, sequences awesome and stable, and lifts perfectly executed without any glitches. What a show!!!. They won their trials going straight to the finals with the only 10 of the Tandem comp. Brian and Kathy had to go through the repo.

The second heat of trials had the Number 2 (Bobby & Tiare Friedman) & Number 4 (Duane & Brianna De Soto) teams from the ISA World Championship.  Not too many waves in this heat but perfect execution of a one arm back to Falcon with a solid surf all the way to the shore from the Big Island team, Bobby & Tiare.  Duane & Brianna were just behind, warming up for the repo.

The last Trial heat was also really competitive with two Makaha boys.  Excellent heat from Jason & Jeannette Paterson who show us their skill with trying one of the hardest lifts on the chart (pyramid) but not enough to stop Bruddah Mel & Nani who, one more time, did their move perfectly with a 360 helicopter at the

The Repo was really intense with such a high level of competition. Brian & Kathy took the advantage, beating out Duane (man of the contest this year) & Brianna and Jason & Jeannette.

The Almost 100% Hawaiian Final got off to a good start and no one was ready to leave his place at the peak. The Wave lottery started and the boys took the advantage straight away on this final. After a perfect 1st wave (arm to arm with surf and one arm back to falcon with more surf) from the Big Island team (Bobby & Tiare), the couple were waiting for a second good set to be able to win but it never came. Kalani & Blanche were really close to the Makaha Boys, but probably needed another good one to be able to beat them. The victory came to Brian & Kathy who surfed perfectly all the way through.

The podium at the closing ceremony was intense and now everyone is already waiting for next year to compete again in this perfect place.

1st: Brian & Kathy
2nd: Melvin & Nani
3rd: Kalani & Blanche
4th: Bobby & Tiare
