After almost twenty years of
success within the European Professionnal Surfing Association, the little
village of Tapia - Spain, will once again host in 2007 a crucial event.
But in a different context.
Looking forward to remain in the international schedule, organisers had to
deal with the multiplication of events on the world tour, and decided to
let go their classic 1 Star WQS and change direction towards another
discipline, longboarding.
Longboarding has been forgotten a bit during the last few years, while the
WCT Dream Tour and the WQS were growing fast. Thanks to the determination
of some organisers, longboarding is coming back on the scene and Tapia is
proud to become one of them. Moreover, as a new 6 Star WQS event will take
place in South Africa at the same period, it was obvious for the
organisers to evolve and adapt to the calendar’s needs.
Looking at the location overall, this is approximately the frame; cold
water (13/15°C), a beautiful little fishermen’s village where local
specialities offer a taste of the variety Spain keeps secret, in its far
country. From April 5th to 8th, the Spanish village will thus welcome the
best European longboarders and the courageous internationals who will
fight in testing conditions and try to seize the first ever Tapia
longboard crown.
The 1 Star WLT event will gather both men and women during four days of
intense surfing, where nine footers’ will take control of the little bay,
to offer classic legendary style. At the historical venue where Peter
Gulley surfed for the first time in the seventies, Tapia seems to be the
exact location for a return to the roots of surfing.
Concerning the competition, the Men’s Tapia Longboard Pro will crown the
2007 European Champion and former continental champions as Jonathan
Larcher or Romain Maurin might answer the call. The experienced men will
however face the young gifted newcomers as Antoine Delperro or Thibault
Dussarat amongst others.
The Women’s Tapia Longboard Pro will be the first stop of two for our best
female surfers, including Claire Karabatsos, semifinalist at the Roxy
Women’s World Longboard Championships in 2006. The girls will have the
opportunity to get on with their 2007 european campaign and secure
precious points with all eyes focused on the top 4 that will get the
chance to surf in the 2007 Roxy Women’s World Longboard Championships,
next July in Biarritz.
Gathering the best longboarders at the exotic village of Tapia, where
massive crowds will attend the event and enjoy the long smooth waves of
the little bay surrounded by cliffs, organisers offer once again a great
opportunity for surfing in Europe, keeping the legend alive.
