Foster's ASP World Champion's
Crowning![]() Former ASP world surfing champions, from left to right: Australians Peter Townend (1976) and Wayne Bartholomew (1977), South African Shaun Tomson (1978) and Australian Mark Richards (1979 - 1982) joined reigning world champions American Kelly Slater (pictured right) (1992, 94-98, 2005, 2006) and Australian Layne Beachley (1998 - 2004, 2006) gathered for a night of the surf stars at Jupiter's Casino on the Gold Coast last night. Beachley (Manly Beach, Sydney) and Slater (Cocoa Beach, Florida) were presented with their 2006 ASP world title trophies, rewriting the record books yet again, when they dominated the sport of surfing in 2006. "To win seven (Beachley) and eight (Slater) world titles in any discipline is an amazing feat, so to have athletes of this calibre with careers as long and decorated as Kelly and Layne's is a testament to our sport," said ASP CEO Brodie Carr. "The fact that they are both revved up to go back on tour and do again this year is even better!" The World Champion's Crowning, held just prior to the launch of the 2007 Foster's ASP and ASP Women's World Tours at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast, saw 600 of surfing's elite gather at Jupiter's Casino to honour the world champions and also acknowledge champions from various disciplines of surfing. |
