Politicians
launch a plan in an attempt to restore Kirra to it’s past glory
Queensland State Member for
Currumbin Jann Stuckey and Tweed Nationals candidate Geoff Provest will
today launch a Six-Point Plan to fix problems caused by the sand build up in
and around Duranbah and Kirra beaches resulting from the Queensland / NSW
Sand Bypass Project.
The plan, devised by regional community group Coastal Alliance, calls on the
NSW and Queensland State Governments to:
1. return the 30 metres of rock wall removed from big groyne Kirra
2. remove penalties if quota of sand is not delivered or over delivery
happens
3. monitor sand delivery by a more hands-on team
4. create a new grid delivery area north and west of Coolangatta bay for the
dredge
5. create of a new grid delivery area south of the by-pass system for the
dredge
6. create an outlet at north Kirra
Ms Stuckey and Mr Provest are supporting petitions to their respective state
governments to help them understand that these ‘simple and inexpensive’
measures should be taken immediately for the benefit of local beach users.
“This is one of a myriad of cross-border issues our respective Labor
Governments have put into the too-hard basket,” Mr Provest said.
Mrs Stuckey, a long time campaigner for an audit of the sand-pumping project
said “constituents were often frustrated by the ‘head-in-the-sand’ attitude
of the current Labor MP for Tweed.
“It doesn’t matter whether it is the Tugun Bypass or the Sand Bypass, all we
ever get from Neville Newell is stubborn and lazy opposition to fixing the
problems we share on both sides of the border.
“That is why I am looking for a new era of co-operation with Geoff Provest.
We are not waiting for the NSW election next month. We are working together
right now” Ms Stuckey concluded.
