Sony Pictures Animation launches Surf's Up film website

Sony Pictures Animation has launched the official websitefor the animated Surf's Up, coming to theaters on June 8. At the site, you can check out the interactive map to hear fun commentary on cities around the world and there is a live webcam on Pen Gu Island as well.

Surf's Up is based on the groundbreaking revelation that surfing was actually invented by penguins. In the film, a documentary crew will take audiences behind the scenes and onto the waves during the most competitive, heartbreaking and dangerous display of surfing known to man, the Penguin World Surfing Championship.

Kelly Slater, along with professional surfer Rob Machado and Sal Masekela, voice major roles in the animated movie.

Slater said it was exciting to be part of a prominent project focused on surfing. "A lot of the guys working on the film didn't surf before, but managed to find a real passion for surfing."

Surfer Masekela plays the sports commentator for station SPEN. "I play an over-the-top version of myself," he said. Machado and Slater play themselves, although transformed into penguins.

Slater said he hopes the story will reach out to all sorts of people. "A great story can be about anything in life as long as it has a universal theme people can identify with."

The movie also features the voices of Jeff Bridges, Shia LaBeouf, Zooey Deschanel, James Woods, Jane Krakowski, Jon Heder, MarioCantone, Brian Benben and Michael McKean.
