Day One…..of EIGHT!

Man that rego killed us.  Dreamed about nothing but rego, draws, missed names and the howling offshore wind all night.  Sure enough dawn brought us a very flat ocean!  Harry James down in Opunake reported that Arawhata Road was a no go.  Stent was waist high, surfable but small.  Oakura Beach was looking terrible with a nor-easterly running up the beach.  The call was made for Back Beach, clean offshores and waist to shoulder high sets.

We give the older guys some reprieve and a morning off.  The groms, being at the bottom of the pecking order are made to surf – Under 18s, 16s and 14s.  The surf looks fun but would be a struggle if you were over 55kg.

The swell forecast for the week looks promising and the wind looks light all week.  We could be on the points by tomorrow.

Heat 1 of the Hyundai National Champs – The Breakers Under 18 Boys is taken out by the Gissy boys Buck Woods and Adam Cranston followed by Tane Wallis and Luke Grubb.  And that completes the first of over 180 heats.  What’s that song about bottles of beer of the wall?

The set up is complete, flags are up and the machine is running.  The internet coverage here is next to nothing so updates will be minimal.

STOP PRESS – top surfers pull out of event.

Bobby Hansen has had to pull out of the Nationals with his injured knee.  While he said he could surf he said he wouldn’t be able to surf good enough to win the event and therefore it wasn’t worth competing.  We think resting it up for the international events is a better option too.  Hope the fishing is good!

Alex Dive couldn’t complete the miraculous recovery required to compete in the event and has had to pull out as well.  Only four days out of a leg cast it was always going to be an uphill battle.

Lynden Kennings opts out of competing at the event leaving it up to his son Dune to hold the fort.
