Steinlager Hawaiian South Shore Open Event Gets Some Summer Swell
The third event on the Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series, the Hawaiian South Shore Open had the 180 competitors amped over the weekend as Waikiki was blessed with the first real swell this summer. Surf running in the five to eight foot face range made for some good performance surfing as Duane DeSoto made it another win in taking down the professional division and claiming $1200.00 for his efforts. Knowing the swell was inconsistent during the day, Desoto caught a solid wave to start the heat and moved to the inside for two backup rides as the second half of the late afternoon high tide final made it difficult to find sets.
With DeSoto securing
the best waves, the other three competitors scrambled for scores and Ewa
Beach shortboarder tuned longboard rider Isaac Kaneshiro suprised
spectators with some hot dog style manuevers for a runner-up finish.
Rounding out the field was Honolulu's Keegan Edwards and Ned Snow
respectively.
Professional longboarder Kai Sallas took second, getting the only clean tube ride of the final with Kailua-Kona's Leleo Kinimaka, winner of the first two events, getting third. Rounding out the field was Makaha surfers Dave Parmenter, Brian Keaulana and Mel Pu'u. The next stop on the Steinalager Shaka Longboard Series tour is scheduled for July 21, 22, 2007. The Quiksilver Boardriders contest will be held at the Ala Moana Bowl.
