Surfing Queensland is proud to announce that they have donated more than $15,000 to charities on the back of proceeds made from auction items at the Stubbies 30th Year Surfing Reunion in April.

A Michael ‘MP’ Peterson replica surfboard, Mark ‘MR Richards surfboard, Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew photo as well as a limited edition Peter Crawford photo of Michael Peterson were auctioned off at the celebratory luncheon to assist charitable organisations.

Charities; including Sids and Kids, SurfAid International, On Track Community Programs and the Peter Crawford (PC) Photography Foundation have largely benefited from the one-off financial donations.

"The Stubbies 30 Year reunion was such an amazing day for the sport of surfing and we were really stoked to be able to hold such a historical reunion at Burleigh Heads," said Surfing Queensland CEO Andrew Stark.

"The Charity Auction was a huge success and it is with pleasure we pledge these funds to the nominated charities."

$4435 was successfully donated to the Sids and Kids charity from the auction of a Mark Richards replica surfboard.

The National SIDS Council of Australia, trading as SIDS and Kids, is a high-profile and well-respected not-for-profit organisation that boasts an enviable history of success.

Over the past 14 years SIDS and Kids, through our health promotion program SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping, has been instrumental in reducing the infant mortality rate by around 84%.

Moreover, Sids and Kids has successfully committed itself to research into the possible causes of SIDS and an education program derived from the research.

Surfing Queensland’s donation of $1,320 to SurfAid International from the auction of the Rabbit Bartholomew photo will go towards controlling malaria in all 203 villages in the Mentawai Islands, off Sumatra, Indonesia.

SurfAid was the first organisation to run formal scientific trials of malaria control in pilot villages in the region. The trials indicate that a major reduction in malaria transmission is possible utilising new, long lasting insecticide nets and community-wide malaria education. Donations can be made via SurfAid’s website at www.surfaidinternational.org

Meanwhile, a further $5,200 from the proceeds of the Michael Peterson replica surfboard has been given to the On Track Community Program, who provides a range of community-based support services for people experiencing mental illness, disability, homelessness or extreme disadvantage. Their aim is to improve an individual’s quality of life and assist them to participate more fully within the community.

All On Track programs are facilitated by On Track staff and consumers or in collaboration with other services and take place on site at On Track, in the community.

The fourth and final charity benefiting from the donation was the Peter Crawford Photography Foundation.

The true status of Peter Crawford and his legacy is still being realised both in Australia's surfing history and around the world.

Some of the vintage surfing photography that came from Crawford’s lens is still alive, including an iconic image of Michael ‘MP’ Peterson bottom turning at the Stubbies Classic in 1977 at Burleigh Heads.

In keeping, $4,750 was raised for the foundation via the auction of the classic image at the Stubbies 30th Year Reunion.

Thanks to Surfing Queensland and the support of Crawford’s son, Justin, his images are to be preserved and restored via transferring every photo to digital film.
