Michael Bellamy takes the win at the Logger Heads Classic by www.australianlongboarding.com DAY ONE Cold start to the day, but soon started to warm up nicely - thank you!! Friday morning we were greeted by a fairly decent Southerly swell The contest was held away from the Point and in towards the beach a bit The swell was bending around the corner of the Point, producing some nice little walls to work on There was a pretty fair old wind blowing, making paddling onto some of the waves a bit of a chore There seemed to be only one take-off point available, as surfers who paddled wide soon found out What appeared on the horizon to be a cracker of a wave, soon faded out to nothing out wide, whereas the surfer who took what seemed to be the smaller section in close to the rocks got the wave So the day ended with some thick walls forming off the Point and going all the way into shore The free-surfers on the whole were good, giving the competitors room to perform DAY TWO Another cool start with a fairly brisk wind knocking the tops, and some of the lighter surfers, off the back of the waves The Juniors hit the water today, and paddled into some nice little walls The waves were still very thick, and to the uninitiated, were not exactly breaking where they thought they would be Very strong rip in the early part of the day Surfers who stopped paddling would soon find themselves going backwards The day ended with the waves starting to chop-up a bit, and the wind still taking the tops off them DAY THREE (FINALS) A 7.30am start for the Finals Day of the 2007 Logger Heads Malibu Classic Surf had died down considerably from the past two days, but there were still plenty of waves to go around - even with some of the free-surfers getting in on the act Biggest problem today was the sun glare Made it virtually impossible for the Judges to see rashie colours until the surfers had either come closer to shore, or had finished up their ride out of the direct path of the sun This was overcome, very brilliantly, by the Contest Director standing on the Point, and with a wireless microphone in hand, was calling the colours as they took off This was no mean feat, as the Point was a good 200 metres from the Judges tent, and it said a great deal for the quality of the PA System they used There were some good little walls to be had in all the Finals, and by the end of the day, the wind had virtually died off, leaving a nice smooth ocean to play in The waves out at the Point were, on occasion, breaking close to head height, but were quickly reducing in size as they made their way to the reform section on the sand bar The Presentation was held at the local Bowling Club Overall, a pretty well organised comp (Personal observation only) A professional judging panel would be the icing on the cake for this one
