Mavericks Surf Contest gets greenlight for Saturday swell
Legendary surfer and Contest Director Jeff Clark has officially called The 2008 Mavericks Surf Contest® for 8 a.m. on Saturday January 12th. For the first time in Mavericks Contest history, Mother Nature will deliver a Contest-worthy swell during the official waiting period over a weekend. Support from the County of San Mateo, the City of Half Moon Bay and numerous Contest partners will make this historic day possible. Surfers will compete for a total prize purse of $75,000 and the title of 2008 Mavericks Surf Contest® Champion. The 2008 Champion will be presented with $30,000 grand prize, a limited edition REACTOR watch, and a one-of-a kind, hand-shaped Jeff Clark surfboard. Mavericks organizers are encouraging fans to view the free, live webcast of the Contest from the comfort of their own homes at myspace.com/maverickssurf or to attend the special live viewing party at AT&T Park in San Francisco, with webcast footage displayed on the giant AT&T stadium screen. Given the difficulty of seeing the event from shore, these alternatives represent the best viewing options for Mavericks fans. The groundbreaking webcast will feature multiple cameras and, for the first time, close-up shots of all the action on the water from a wireless jet ski cam. All-day Tickets for the AT&T Park viewing party will include in-and-out privileges and can be purchased for $20 in advance at attpark.com or for $25 on Saturday at AT&T Park. January 12 – 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (t.b.d. weather permitting); 7:30 a.m. – Media boat (Huli Cat) scheduled to depart from “H” dock; 8:00 a.m. – Contest begins (four first round heats); 11:30 a.m. – Semi–finals begin (2 heats); 1:30 p.m. – Finals begin (1 heat); 3:00 p.m. – Awards Ceremony (on beach)
