The Sacred Craft
Consumer Surf Expo is pleased to announce the honoring of Santa Barbara
shaping icon Renny Yater during the expos Tribute to the Masters Shape-off.
Five shapers will be selected to replicate a classic Yater design during the
Tribute to the Masters Shape-off. The Ventura Sacred Craft Surf Expo takes
place April 10 & 11 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds at C-street.
Born in Los Angeles in 1932, Reynolds "Renny" Yater started surfing when he
was 14. He started production shaping surfboards in 1953 at the age of 21,
but not under his name. From 1955 to 1957, he glassed balsa boards for Hobie
Surfboards in Dana Point and then refined his shaping skills while working
for Dale Velzy in San Clemente from 1957 to 1959. When surfing hit the
mainstream, Renny chose to keep his operation small and the quality high
when some of his peers were ramping up and turning out the numbers. He made
his name as a shaper for the phenomenal Yater Spoon, a spectacularly light
and maneuverable design for the era that was incubated in the long winding
points of the Santa Barbara coastline.
"We are stoked, as well as humbled, to honor Renny Yater, a surfer,
craftsman, designer and artist," explained Sacred Craft Expo director Scott
Bass. "Renny Yater has shaped thousands of surfboards for thousands of
surfers and in doing so he helped shape an entire surf culture at Rincon and
the surrounding areas and he continues to do so."
Another of this years' main attractions is the Vintage Surfboard Road Show
event, which was a huge success in Del Mar.
"We are urging surfers to dig through their garages, their storage space,
and their backyards for collectable surfboards and magazines that they think
may hold some real value," explained Bass. "Anything special and unique from
say, 1985 or so and earlier, especially if it is in good shape, probably has
value above and beyond normal used-board pricing. Our expert appraisers can
determine a estimated value."
Early bird value pricing on exhibitor booth space for the spring 2010
Ventura SACRED CRAFT Consumer Surfboard Expo is available now through March
1, 2010.
"We are ecstatic to the response we've received for the Ventura SACRED CRAFT
Expo," said Expo Director Scott Bass. "Exhibitors have told me that they
appreciate the inherent value and the core based vibe of SACRED CRAFT. If
you want to reach salt-of-the-earth surfers, SACRED CRAFT is the place. We
showcase the core of the surf industry. Our exhibitors put the 'board' in
boardshorts."
The spring SACRED CRAFT Surf Expo takes place at the Ventura County
Fairgrounds on April 10 & 11, 2010. Located smack dab on top of Ventura's
venerable C Street surf spot, it is an ideal location for demo-ing product
to the consumer. As always there will be lots to do and see including live
shaping, live glassing, art demonstrations, music, seminars, surf movies,
surfboard demos, surfboard giveaways, book signings, autographs, food, drink
and good times.
