Hosted annually by the DV8 Malibu Club Inc., this was the 23rd Annual Skipp Banana Malibu Classic and was held on Saturday February 9 2008 at The Shallows, near Bass Point - good move.
The surf was a complete contrast to the previous couple of years, when it was miserable, to say the least. This year's offering was by far the best the contest has experienced for quite a while.
The local free surfers were great, leaving the entire break to the contestants.
There were about 22 heats, semis and finals, with probably around 65 surfers doing combat.
For the second time this year an Open Women's event was run. There were 7 competitors this time round, with hopes that there will be even greater numbers in subsequent events.
The weather was absolutely atrocious. The rain continued for pretty-well the whole day, with only very short spurts of "slightly finer" conditions.
