History repeats at the Hyundai Malfunction
2006 Winner Harley Ingleby
The Golden Breed mantra “Ride ‘em all” has become a familiar cry at the Malfunction over the last couple of years and the 2008 Hyundai Malfunction is no exception. Attracting competitors that assemble to compare and compete on boards constructed in the late 60’s and through out the 70’s, most competitors surf with an exhibitionists aplomb and generally compete to have a good time.
Catering for competitors in 3 different divisions Open, Under 18’s and Old Mals (pre 1967 boards), this years Golden Breed Retro Day has attracted a mix of professional and amateur competitors. Defending champion Jackson Close who was a finalist in this years Burleigh Single Fin contest will be looking for back to back wins. Current Australian Longboard Champion Harley Ingleby will be out to avenge last years loss when an ankle injury saw him unable to defend the inaugural title he won in 2006. Not that these two will have it all their own way with Coolangatta's Matt Aldridge, Sapphire Beach’s Jared Neal and Dalmeny’s Ray Lawrence sure to be in the mix.
All eyes will be on Kingscliff mystro Ray Gleave when he lines up in the Golden Breed Old Mal division for the first time in 3 years. Gleave who made this division his own since the 80’s will be sure to attract plenty of attention as he demonstrates his trademark drop knee turns and cutbacks as he entertains the crowds. One person sure to be watching will be son Cameron, no mean surfer himself, as he waits his turn to take on Close and Ingleby in the Open division
The Hyundai Malfunction Surf Festival will celebrate all the unique facets of surfing life including the beach, music, food, art and cars.
Now in its 25th year, the 2008 Hyundai Malfunction will attract more than 300 competitors from around the world as well as a large contingent of spectators who can join in a host of events to be held out of the water. These events include the Domain Casuarina Beach Resort Art Exhibition, a Laua dinner, the Von Weirdos Surf Memorabilia Auction and the Salt Village Surf Vehicle Rally.
In the water surfers will have the chance to compete for a number of open amateur and aged divisions for traditional surfers, a leg of the ASP World Longboard Qualifying Series the Surftech Pro for Men & Women, the Golden Breed Retro day for boards constructed prior to 1981 and the Honolua Stand Up Paddle Surfing.
