Arrived at
Avoca around 6am
-
Tent City all up & running by 7am
-
The Drawer Sheet said that the conditions would be
classified as Multiple Random - Boy, was that an understatement
-
Total of eleven divisions were run
-
Around 110 competitors
-
First Heats in the water paddled into some fairly
chunderous waves
-
Big Rips and Uneven Faces
-
I think it was a Nor-Easter that was blowing the crap out
of the waves
-
Whatever it was, it was sure making a mess
-
The day slowly improved before falling foul of the wind
again
-
Around 27-heats were knocked over, including all First
Heats and most of the Semis
-
Same spot, but slightly bigger conditions
-
T'was a big beach day indeed
-
Our comp was on
half-way down the beach, the Avoca Boardriders had their pointscore out on
the Point, whilst the local Life Saving Club was holding their Nippers Day
up & down the entire beach.
-
Just love the smell of 2-stroke in the morning
-
Over the weekend in
general, it was a bit tough getting the free-surfers out of the area, but
when competitors started free-surfing in the comp area, it became a bit
ludicrous.
-
Mix them with the goose on the Jet-Ski whizzing in & out
with the Nippers and things were getting a little crowded
-
Wind stayed off-shore for quite a while, before eventually
swinging to the nor-east again
-
The last of the Semis were finished off before the Finals
got underway around 10am
-
The Women's Final held towards the end of the day saw some
true overhead sets rolling through
-
The girls took them on and were a fine example of the
talent amongst our fairer sex
-
There was a brief period during the day when the waves were
actually looking good, but these conditions were soon replaced by
sand-filled close-outs
-
Where there was once a channel on the in-coming tide, soon
became a sandbar fit for snapping boards
-
A couple of boards suffered the ultimate fate of either
being snapped in half or having a fatal crease compliments of some pretty
heavy waves
-
The potential name-change was brought about by the fact
that Mitch Fraser won all three of the Divisions he contested
-
As in the past years, this comp was well run and well
patronised
-
Professional Judges made it an easy weekend for all the
competitors to go off and enjoy a bit of a free-surf (out of the comp
area, of course)
