Swell, 4 to 6 ft bone crunchers!
Clunkers ruled the day in perfect Warilla Beach straight-handers. The DV8
Malibu Riders annual Pieces of 8 comp got underway just south of Wollongong
in God-awful conditions. A south-east wind kicked in early (a big no-no for
the east coast) and it was cold. This comp hosts only 8 foot malibus and
70's single fin events and there were some real clunkers in the mix, lots of
pretty little 6 ft single fins with heaps of battle scars.
A fun day, a little low on numbers but the DV8s have been going for over 20
years and with new skipper Troy Kenn at the helm along with Ray and Jenny
Mahony to back him up, it will surely stand the test of time.
Unfortunately Warrilla beach has to have one of the shortest but hardest
paddle outs around. Ten minutes of paddling in once spot is not uncommon and
considering that after the paddle you might be close enough for someone to
throw a rock at you, it seems like a lot of trouble for nothing but remember
that surfing is always the winner, just not always the surfers!
Nick Farago, straight from the Ozzie titles, screamed into 1st place in the
open 8ft event, then a 3rd in the Open 70's and along with the Best move and
Off the top awards, really cleaned up the old farts (me included). Dan
Rolands managed a strong 1st in the open 70s, while defending champ Rod
Arnott couldn't get it together and only managed a 6th place, apparently
this year they made him surf a real 70's single fin. John Skinner, the
perpetual grommet, took 1st in the over 40s 70s single fin event and Steve
Rutten won the 0ver 40s 8ft event. We all got bashed but loved it!
The DV8 club is truly a classic bunch of surfers and will host another
event, the Banana Classic, next year so we'll all be there with bells on.
