Standouts in the Womens were Juniors Danielle Thrasyvolou,Sam Scott  along with up and coming Lucy Riethmaier. Hillary East showed her experience in the trying conditions to take a close 1st over Bryony Barlow.

The Open Mens Longboard was hotly contested and the calibre of entries was high. Dane Leadbetter surfed well but was unlucky not to progress to the final. Thomas Kibblewhite showed why he was selected for the NZ team that recently competed at the Worlds in Huntington, and dominated the event right from the start. Tai Flavell and Matt Cockayne  also surfed consistently throught out the entire event.

In both Junior Divisions the level of surfing was good. A few of the groms travelled some distance for this event, particularly Peter Sharpe  who came down from Russell. All heats were close and  Louie Smith took the Longboard and Peter Sharpe took the Shortboard.

The Open Shortboard  was run at the end of the event and took a Expression Session format. TK surfed out of his skin catching 2 long waves right to the sand. Rowan Klevstul  showed good form and Rian Boyd was also a standout.

Thanks must go to Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service for allowing us the venue, Slide, Curl and 09 Surfing Magazines for all your support and coverage. ...too much crew. Epic!!!!!

The aim was to promote awareness about Sand Mining and I was stoked about the support I had through out the event. It is obvious that the surfing community is opposed to mining along our coastline and the next step will be to get active in the decision making process. I raised over $700 for KASM and everyone left stoked on a good day at the beach.
