Jersey Longboard Riders Malfunction

The Earth, Wind and Water Malfunction 2007

August tends to be the silly season for most sports and surfing in Jersey over the weekend did not want to be left out.  The Jersey Longboard Riders held their malfunction contest on Sunday which turned out to be a glorious day with a slight offshore breeze and lovely small waves.

The malfunction is run completely differently from most contests as the surfboards are provided by the club, with quality surfing still being rewarded, but extra points are  given for dress code, rugby tackles, drop-ins, head stands and of course stylish dismounts which just about covers anything and everything. It all sounds so easy until after picking “that” lucky number out of the hat.

The corresponding board that you are given to ride is a big heavy old beast of a thing that harks back to the 60s and 70s, it could possibly be the worst example of a board from that time. Andre Le Geyt set the standard right from the first heat as he floored Dylan with a great rugby tackle.

The giggles had only just subsided when Tom Wilkinson wiggled down to the waters edge in a thong instead of his wettie, add to this a backflip dismount and he nearly won manoeuvre of the day! Rodrigo Olivero representing the clubs main sponsor Citygroup, did well to make the final and took a deserved 4th place,  all the better as he has been sitting at a desk in London for the last 9 months.

James Carden, in the masters had the advantage of having ridden the old boards way back  pipped Dave “Woof” Ferguson for the Masters title and Grace Davies just  scampered past Nina Blake for the ladies. Joe Davies took the Open division with some very good old school surfing, and with Paul Wagstaffe trying his hardest to change all that with a close 2nd place.

Cole Jouanny won the Juniors but looked seriously confused with all the messing about going on around him  created by the move of the day won by Andre.  Having jumped on Paul Wagstaffe’s back as he paddled  into a wave Andre rode Wags for a good 30metres along the wave!

Bunty of Earth Wind and Water presented Trophies and goody bags for all the winners and at the conclusion said “that having been involved in surfing and water sports on the island from the 60s, the way this event had been run and the fun that has been had, is exactly what surf contests were and should be about.

Everyone involved today were winners”. Bunty then presented a huge box of goodies for all the youngsters to help themselves and everyone went home with a smile.
