SurfAid International update on Indo quake and recovery
Dire
Situation for Mentawai Islanders as SurfAid Runs Earthquake Relief Effort In
response to two powerful earthquakes having struck the region of the
Mentawai Islands, SurfAid International is currently receiving donations for
relief efforts where SurfAid has been and continues to provide humanitarian
services.
SurfAid has visited and assessed more than 100 Mentawai villages and
launched eight relief boats delivering food, shelter, medical attention,
fuel, and building supplies to some of the 30,000 displaced residents.
Additional support is needed to continue these efforts. Please support the
people of the Mentawai Islands with a contribution to the Mentawai
Earthquake Appeal.
SurfAid's Community-Based Health Programs Take Off
SurfAid's ongoing efforts to assist residents in lowering morbidity and
mortality in the Mentawai Islands and Nias continues to make great
progress. The latest milestone is the establishment of Care Groups in each
of 53 beneficiary communities as part of the SurfAid Community Based Health
Programs. Throughout the Mentawai Islands and Nias, 870 volunteers have
been elected to SurfAid Care Groups; stewarding 37,000+ residents towards a
healthier future.
Malaria Free Mentawai Program Makes Strides
SurfAid International completed Phase 1 and 2 of the Malaria Free Mentawai
program with excellent results. All targets were met including the
distribution of over 14,000 mosquito nets.
First Training Held at Quiksilver-SurfAid Community Health
Training Centre
Katiet program designer Brendan Hoare demonstrates how to make compost on
site at the Quiksilver SAI Centre. The first training in composting and
growing vegetables and fruit has been held at the Quiksilver-SurfAid
Community Health Training Centre, a model home/garden program which is due
for first-stage completion in November this year.
A Natural Disaster
Indonesia's proximity to the subduction zone and fault line makes it a
target for the deadliest earthquakes and tsunamis.
Shaman read the disaster-preparedness comics
As part of its school based disaster preparedness program, E-Prep staff are
distributing comics about tsunami, earthquakes, floods, cyclones and
tropical storms and landslides. E-Prep is SurfAid International's
community-based disaster risk management program funded by the Australian
Government through AusAID.
While the comics have been developed for children, they also include basic
information about disasters in the back and are also an important
information tool for adults in the community.
SurfAid International and Billabong Launch Global Schools Program
SurfAid International and surf company Billabong launch a unique schools
program that will have far-reaching effects around the world - alleviating
suffering and death in impoverished communities.
The SurfAid International Billabong Schools Program will provide a
dynamic learning opportunity for students, educating them about the
geography, economy, culture, health and living conditions of the 70,000
people of the Mentawai Island region, off the coast of West Sumatra,
Indonesia.
Billabong Girls Raise $25,000 and Experience SurfAid's Work
First-Hand
After raising US$25,000 for SurfAid at their Design For Humanity
event in Los Angeles in April, a team of Billabong Girls headed out into
Indonesia's Mentawai Islands to experience SurfAid's work first-hand.
Keala Kennelly, Rebecca Woods, Silvana Lima and Sanoe Lake, along with
team manager Megan Brainard, ventured into one of SurfAid's villages,
Malilimok, to witness a Care Group meeting in action and also to visit one
of the poorest houses in the village.
Swim 4 Life Comes to New York & New Jersey
Get out your swim caps and trunks, SurfAid's Swim 4 Life is coming to the US
East Coast in October! This is a chance for surfers, businesses and
humanitarians to get together, have a good swim, and help save lives. We
have two locations covering New York and New Jersey and the dates are
October 20-21. If you can't join us, please help us spread the word to
friends and family in NY/NJ.

Liquid Nation Do It Again! For the fourth time, Liquid Nation has exceeded
expectations and raised $250,000 for humanitarian charities, including
SurfAid International. Special thanks goes out to the Surf Industry
Manufacturer's Association (SIMA), event hosts Fernando & Vicki Aguerre and
Santiago & Cecelia Aguerre, and everyone who contributed to making this
event such a great success!
Surpassing SIMA’s expectations, it is estimated that more than $250,000 was
raised at the 4th annual Liquid Nation Ball. Held at the spectacular La
Jolla oceanfront residence of Fernando and Vicky Aguerre, the guest list
read like the Who’s Who of the surf industry.
Surf icons Rob Machado, Lisa Andersen, Greg Noll, Paul Naude, Bob McKnight,
Dick Baker and more all enjoyed great food, dancing and a highly
entertaining live auction in which the host himself, Fernando Aguerre,
Vice-President of the SIMA Humanitarian Fund, Co-Founder of Reef, and
Advisory Board Member for SurfAid literally sold the pants he was wearing
for the sake of charity.

beneficiary of the new Beer Shout!
2007 Paddle Round The Pier Beach Festival Benefits SurfAid for
the 3rd Time!
For three years running now, SurfAid has been the beneficiary of the Paddle
Round the Pier Beach Festival in Brighton, U.K. A big thanks goes out to
Dave Samuel, Henrietta Hutcheon and everyone involved in this year's event
for raising nearly $8,000 for SurfAid's efforts. We are pleased to announce
that next year's event will once again benefit the people of the Mentawai
Islands and Nias.
Soundwaves Cologne Benefit Event for SurfAid on August 25, 2007
Thanks goes out to Christian and the organizers of Soundwaves Cologne! About
300 guests raised a total amount of EUR 1330 which is great considering the
trifecta of challenges: no one had never heard about SurfAid International,
Germany has hardly any surf culture and Cologne is about 400 kilometers away
from the nearest ocean!
You can look at pictures of the night at myspace.com/soundwaves2007. Wave of
Compassion Videos You entered to win a trip of a lifetime (and unless your
name is Paul Bryan, unfortunately you didn't win). You followed the picture
show on Surfline.com last October while the winner's trip was profiled
daily. Now see the vids and get pumped for the next Wave of Compassion!
A big thanks to Billabong, IMG Media and the Association of Surfing
Professionals (ASP) for including a 5 minute segment on SurfAid's work in
