Jersey Longboard Citigroup Summer Series wraps up

The Jersey Longboard Riders Association held the second of their Summer Series contests over the weekend at the Green Hut, St.Ouens Bay in Jersey. A relaxed atmosphere, light winds, 2ft of swell, another perfect day for guys to enjoy a long day for all competitors involved in the event.

The “Line-up” restaurant provided the refreshments throughout the day and with the two top ranked surfers, Joe Davies, back at Uni and Gordon Blake sidelined with a shoulder injury, the contest got underway with the knowledge of a very open contest

The Junior ranks have expanded over the summer and the quality of surfing has jumped forward with some very progressive moves being pulled off by Jack Seymour, just missing out on the final and the big old school drop knee turns being completed by Cole Jouanny who made the grand final to pip Jack to take top spot in the Juniors.

Scott Letherbarrow and Will Glenn are really pushing hard on their new boards but were unable to take their quality of free surfing into their heats and standout super grom Ben Bates continues to improve his cross stepping but his strength to back up waves put him at a disadvantage.

In the Ladies, Grace Davies still dominates, making it through to the open semis but there are a few young girls being encouraged by Grace to compete for the first time which is great for the future and of these girls the stand outs were Charlotte Bayliss and Megan Jones.

In the Open Division, all eyes were on the style master, Jed Augun, who was pushing Andre le Geyt all the way but the two of them forgot about the old dog PJ, who turning back the years, scraped through to the final in the dying moments of his semi final then found it all coming back to him as he did exactly the same in the final.

Long nose rides combined with graceful turns performed on last few sets that came through in the final won it for PJ. Cole was just so excited to have made the final, he couldn’t back up the quality of his semi final and Jed and Andre were left wondering how PJ had outwitted them again.

A great day was had by all, the bonus was, it is October and after presentations and the beers and beautiful sunset were being enjoyed, Andre le Geyt gave a demonstration of “stand up paddleboard” and super grom Ben Bates swum out to ride tandem with Andre which was so funny, so awesome to watch, but basically summed up our perfect day.
